Sacramento County Conflict Criminal Defenders (CCD), a county department within the Countywide Services agency, provides legal representation to those charged with criminal conduct who are financially unable to retain counsel. The Sacramento Superior Court appoints Conflict Criminal Defenders when the Public Defender cannot provide representation because of a conflict of interest or insufficient staff.

Conflict Criminal Defenders provides representation to our clients by assigning private attorneys who are active members of the Sacramento County Bar Indigent Defense Panel. Some of Sacramento County’s finest criminal defense attorneys are members of the Indigent Defense Panel. Some of them have always been in private practice; others have experience as former Public Defenders, and former prosecutors.

The principal objective of Conflict Criminal Defenders is to provide zealous and effective representation in a cost-effective manner.

"The right of one charged with crime to counsel may not be deemed
fundamental and essential to fair trials in some countries, but it is in ours."
Gideon v. Wainwright, 372 U.S. 335 (1963)
